Overview

Our client, a leading consultancy within the high-hazard engineering sector, is seeking a Senior or Principal Technical Safety Engineer to support a growing portfolio of UK and international projects.

This role will focus on delivering high-quality technical safety and risk engineering work across sectors including energy, chemicals and other high-hazard industries. The successful candidate will operate in a client-facing consultancy environment, supporting both project delivery and wider business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality technical work across a range of process safety projects.

Typical responsibilities will include:

• Delivery of Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), including onshore studies
• Supporting or leading development of COMAH Safety Reports and Offshore Safety Cases
• Identification and assessment of major accident hazards and risk profiles
• Application of ALARP principles and recommendation of appropriate risk reduction measures
• Participation in, and ideally leadership of, Process Hazard Analysis workshops (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, FMECA, Bowtie)
• Technical report writing and preparation of client deliverables
• Supporting multidisciplinary project teams across consultancy projects
• Client interaction and contribution to commercial/project delivery discussions
• Occasional UK and international travel for client and site-based work

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate a strong technical background in process safety, engineering risk management or a related discipline.

The successful candidate will:

• Have several years’ experience in Technical Safety or Process Safety within a consultancy or high-hazard operating environment
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of Quantitative Risk Assessment methodologies
• Have knowledge of COMAH Safety Report and/or Offshore Safety Case requirements
• Be able to identify, assess and communicate risk, including application of ALARP principles
• Possess strong analytical and problem-solving capability
• Be highly numerate with strong technical judgement
• Have excellent communication and technical report writing skills
• Be a reliable team player with a commercial awareness

Desirable Experience

• Experience leading Process Hazard Analysis workshops (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA etc.)
• Experience using QRA software such as PHAST and SAFETI
• Programming or advanced analytical skills (Excel, VBA, Python, C++)
• Membership of a relevant professional institution

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering or Science (Chemical Engineering or Physics preferred)
• Professional membership or chartership advantageous

Working Arrangements

The role can be based from one of several UK offices with hybrid working available. Some travel will be required for project work, including occasional multi-day site visits where overnight stays may be necessary.

The Role
Seeking accomplished Senior Consultant to join their successful Safety and Risk Management team. The job will play a pivotal role in delivering effective assessments and expert advice to a diverse range of clients. Including everything from Oil and Gas Operators to other major hazard industries worldwide.

Their team boasts a rich heritage, pioneering cutting-edge risk management techniques since the 1970s. They have continuously developed their expertise and proprietary risk assessment software to enhance their consultancy services.

As a Senior Consultant, the role will primarily be desk-based, demanding a high level of numeracy and report-writing skills. However, the role also necessitates flexibility for travel, ensuring you deliver exceptional service to their international clients.

Their Requirements

The successful candidate will need to be self-motivated and able to prioritise work.

The candidate must have:

• COMAH Safety Reports and Onshore QRAs are becoming requested more and more. This experience would be huge for them.
• Some years of technical safety or process safety experience, preferably in a consultancy or at an operating company in the high-hazard industries
• A good understanding of Quantitative Risk assessment techniques in general
• Knowledge of the Offshore Safety Case and/or COMAH Safety Report requirements
• Able to identify and recommend appropriate risk controls to reduce risks to ALARP
• Good problem-solving skills and is highly numerate
• Excellent communication skills
• Technical report writing ability
• The ability to work reliably as a team player
• A commercial/business focus
• Travel Requirement, occasional UK and International travel for Client/Site visits.

Ideally you will have the following:

A good degree in engineering or science (a degree in chemical engineering or physics is highly desirable) with excellent written and oral communication skills. Membership of a professional institution would be an advantage.

Although not essential the following would be of benefit:

• Experienced in leading Process Hazard Analysis workshops (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, FMECA, Bowtie, etc.)
• Experience in the use of Quantitative Risk Analysis Software such as Phast and Safeti
• Excel skills, Visual Basic, Python and C++ experience
• Membership of a professional institution
