Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Associate Structural Engineer to take a senior technical and team leadership role within an established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy.
The position combines technical leadership, project delivery, team development and client/commercial responsibility. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across complex projects involving buildings, civil structures and industrial assets, with particular expertise in structural design, assessment and refurbishment.
Alongside project delivery, they will support the development of engineering capability through mentoring and coaching, while contributing to client relationships, proposals, tender submissions and the continued growth of the structural engineering business.
The Role
- Lead and manage the technical delivery of building and engineering projects from concept through to detailed design.
- Provide technical leadership across structural design and structural assessment commissions.
- Take responsibility for complex structural engineering projects and provide technical direction where challenging engineering issues arise.
- Maintain technical quality across work undertaken by engineers operating under your supervision, providing effective coaching, guidance and technical review.
- Contribute to successful project delivery, client satisfaction and commercial performance.
- Manage projects against agreed quality, budget and resource requirements.
- Play a key role in design risk management and mitigation and support a positive engineering safety culture.
- Promote technical good practice and continual improvement, including sharing lessons learned from completed and ongoing projects.
- Help develop and grow specialist structural engineering capability through recruitment, mentoring, training and staff development.
- Work directly with clients to establish requirements, define scopes of work and develop project proposals.
- Provide technical input into tenders and bid submissions.
- Work alongside senior management, Business Development and Marketing functions to develop opportunities with existing and prospective clients.
- Communicate effectively with internal disciplines, clients and other external stakeholders.
Candidate Requirements
- Significant structural engineering experience gained within an engineering consultancy environment.
- High-level technical expertise in structural engineering across buildings, civil structures and industrial assets.
- Extensive experience of structural design, refurbishment and assessment.
- Ability to lead and coordinate technically complex structural projects with a high degree of autonomy.
- Strong knowledge of applicable industry standards and guidance covering the design, assessment and refurbishment of buildings.
- In-depth understanding of structural loading and methods of structural analysis.
- Expertise in the design and assessment of reinforced concrete, steel and other structural materials.
- Proficiency with specialist structural analysis and design software.
- Competence with Microsoft Office, CAD, Revit, Tekla and other relevant industry software.
- Proven experience developing technical resources and providing technical leadership to other engineers.
- Experience of line management, coaching and staff mentoring.
- Strong technical report-writing capability and confidence presenting engineering findings and recommendations.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and demanding delivery timescales.
- Strong written and spoken English, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to attend client sites as required.
Qualifications
BEng, MEng or MSc in Civil / Structural Engineering.
Chartered with IStructE or ICE.
Ideally You Will Have
Experience of temporary works design.
An established technical profile, with recognition from clients and industry contacts as a structural engineering specialist.
Working Arrangements
- Permanent, full-time position.
- Hybrid working.
- Central Scotland / Central Belt preferred, although other UK locations may be considered.
- UK travel will be required, with occasional overseas travel and overnight stays depending upon project requirements.
