It is no big shocker to anyone that the job market is tough and that in order to secure yourself a job position you need to stay ahead of the competition. The problem is that over recent years the number of job vacancies available has been steadily decreasing which means that more people have been applying for each position. Of course this means that if you are someone who wants to change career or be awarded a new job – you have to work harder than ever to stand out from the crowd.
Two Little Words Matter
We’re all taught of the importance of manners but what we don’t realise is that when we’re in a job interview scenario they matter more than ever. In fact, even just knowing when to use “thank you” can really help you to stand out from the rest of the candidates applying for the same position.
The chances are that you are grateful that you have been awarded a job interview so why not tell them? Let them know that you are thankful for the chance to be heard and that you recognise that they have had to take time out of their day to interview you. Just a simple “Thank you for your time and the opportunity to meet with you today” is enough to let them know that you acknowledge the opportunity they have given you.
Outside Of The Interview Room
You might think that when you leave an interview that your job is done, you have done everything you can to make it happen and that you just need to leave it in their hands to make a decision – but you are wrong! The chances are that the recruitment team will have seen many different candidates that day so you just need to give them a gentle reminder of who you are.
As soon as you get home from your interview you need to write out a thank-you card. Just a little note inside a card to once again thank them for their time and a sentence or two about how excited you are to hopefully be working for such an organisation. Remember that old-fashioned snail mail isn’t instant like email, so you need to get it in the post as soon as possible!
We’re so used to sending emails to communicate so it could seem like the best and most convenient way to get in touch with your new potential employers following an interview. However, the chances of other people doing this is quite high – no one will (hopefully) think of sending a proper thank you-you card so it’s an easy way to stand out and be remembered for the right reasons.
Manners Matter
We all know that manners matter and therefore they’re very important during an interview, however this is one simply way to go the extra mile and show an employer that you are able to use communication in a professional way and that you’re keen to work with them – why wouldn’t they employ you?
