When it comes to doing well in business, it is easy to assume that climbing the career ladder is our best way to success. We’re taught that in order to strive to do well we need to progress higher and higher up the career ladder. In many ways this is fine but you definitely shouldn’t think of it as your only option. In fact there is a lot to be said for wanting to build connections with people in order to be successful rather than just climbing higher and higher up the ladder.
Appreciate Your Chances
Whilst it is good to look ahead, you need to remember how you got there. By showing an appreciation to the chances you have been given and the people that have helped get you there you are far more likely to get ahead. After all, it is your experiences that have helped shaped the person you are today and helped you gain the skills you need to go for the job you are striving for.
Create New Chances
It is easy to assume that the best way to create new chances is to go out there and grab them. This can work on many occasions but with the right type of business networking the opportunities can come to you. It is well known that often it is a case of who you know and not what you know and this is true in business! You should always be looking at ways to network with relevant people in your industry. Hand out business cards, tell people you’re always looking for new opportunities and make sure people know who you are and what you can do. You never know when they might have a new opportunity available and you could be the first person that they think of!
Create Chances For Others
Whilst you’re networking and creating your own chances, you should also look at ways in which you can help others. If you’re seen as helping others up their own career ladder then people are far more likely to give you chances to. It is all about creating connections with people whether those that can give you a job or those that you can give chances too. You want to show people that you’re a reliable employee who wants the whole business world to do well rather than only being out for yourself.
The Business World is Tough
It is important to remember that the business world is tough and that you create your own opportunities. This doesn’t always mean grabbing them as they arise, but instead setting solid foundations so that they come to you. If you’re always paying attention to building the foundations for your career rather than going for opportunities then this will be even better for you. You want to make sure that you’re the best possible employee rather than only making yourself known when there seems to be an opportunity.
