Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Ecology & Biodiversity to lead and grow a multidisciplinary Ecology & Biodiversity team across the UK.
This senior leadership role combines technical excellence, commercial leadership and people management. The successful candidate will lead the continued growth of the ecology business, ensure high-quality technical delivery while developing client relationships, supporting business strategy and mentoring a growing team of ecological professionals.
The position would suit an experienced Associate Director or Director looking to lead a nationally recognised ecology team within a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy.
Key Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities may include:
- Leading and developing the Ecology & Biodiversity business across the UK
- Providing technical leadership across ecology, biodiversity and environmental projects
- Managing Ecology, Ornithology and Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) teams
- Coordinating Ecology & Biodiversity Managers to ensure consistent technical and operational excellence
- Delivering business growth, profitability and strategic objectives
- Managing clients, multidisciplinary projects and technical teams
- Leading business development activities and developing long-term client relationships
- Managing commercial performance, project budgets and financial reporting
- Leading bids, framework appointments and proposal submissions
- Preparing and reviewing technical ecological reports
- Delivering mentoring, coaching and technical training
- Supporting the development of team strategy, business plans and future growth
- Ensuring high standards of project delivery, client satisfaction and technical quality
Candidate Requirements
Candidates should demonstrate extensive ecology consultancy experience combined with strong technical leadership and commercial management capability.
The successful individual will ideally possess:
- A BSc and/or MSc in Ecology or a related discipline
- Membership of CIEEM or an equivalent professional body
- Chartered Ecologist status would be advantageous
- Extensive experience delivering ecological consultancy projects
- Strong technical capability across:
- Habitat surveys and assessment
- Protected species surveys, mitigation and licensing
- Ornithological surveys and assessment
- Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)
- Construction ecological support
- Ecological project management
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
- Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG)
- Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA)
- Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapters
- Habitat Regulations Appraisals (HRA)
- Appropriate Assessments (AA)
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Excellent understanding of, UK wildlife legislation, Ecological survey guidance and UK planning processes
- Experience reviewing and coordinating EIA chapters
- Experience reviewing HRA and Appropriate Assessments
- Strong background in one or more ecological disciplines including habitats, protected species or ornithology
- Experience delivering Habitat monitoring, Habitat restoration and Construction ecological support
- Experience managing ecological service frameworks
- Experience managing project budgets and financial reporting
- Experience leading multidisciplinary ecology teams
- Experience managing and mentoring staff, including senior personnel
- Excellent report writing, communication and client management skills
- Proven experience developing business strategy and supporting business growth
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel throughout the UK, including occasional overnight stays
