Senior / Principal Ecology Consultant
Location: UK (multiple office locations available)
Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Ecologist to join a growing ecology and biodiversity consultancy team delivering projects across the UK.
The successful candidate will lead ecological consultancy projects supporting infrastructure, development and environmental planning programmes. The role combines field ecology, technical assessment and project leadership, with responsibility for delivering ecological surveys, technical reports and ecological advice to clients.
This position would suit an experienced ecological consultant capable of managing projects, mentoring junior ecologists and providing high-quality ecological input into planning and environmental assessments.
Key Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities may include:
- Leading and managing ecological consultancy projects
- Delivering Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) for development and infrastructure projects
- Completing Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA)
- Providing ecological input into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)
- Leading and coordinating ecological field surveys and habitat surveys
- Undertaking and managing protected species surveys
- Preparing ecological mitigation strategies and advising on biodiversity constraints
- Supporting planning applications by providing ecological technical assessments
- Advising clients on ecological legislation and biodiversity planning policy
- Managing project delivery including programme planning, budgets and client liaison
- Preparing and reviewing ecological technical reports
- Supporting GIS mapping and ecological data analysis
- Providing technical oversight and quality assurance of ecological outputs
- Mentoring junior ecologists and supporting team development
- Developing client relationships and contributing to proposal preparation and business development
Candidate Requirements
Candidates should demonstrate strong ecological consultancy experience and the ability to manage projects and client relationships.
The successful individual will ideally possess:
- A BSc or MSc in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or eligibility to join
- Experience delivering Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA)
- Experience supporting Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA)
- Experience contributing to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)
- Strong knowledge of UK ecological legislation and biodiversity planning policy
- Experience leading ecological surveys and protected species surveys
- Experience managing ecological consultancy projects and client relationships
- Strong report writing and technical communication skills
- Experience using GIS tools for ecological mapping and analysis
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site surveys
Desirable experience may include:
- Chartered Ecologist (CEcol) or Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status
- Ornithology survey experience
- Protected species survey licences (e.g. bats, badger, great crested newt, otter)
- Experience supporting infrastructure, utilities or renewable energy projects
